What to know
Root canal treatment removes inflamed or infected tissue from inside a tooth. The canals are cleaned, disinfected, filled and sealed so the tooth can be retained rather than extracted when the tooth is restorable. Local anaesthesia is used; recovery and the number of visits vary by case.

Fillings repair damage caused by decay. Root canal treatment is used when inflammation or infection reaches the pulp inside a tooth. The aim is to remove infected tissue, clean and seal the canals, and retain the tooth when it can be predictably restored.
Root canal treatment (RCT)
During RCT, the dentist accesses the inside of the tooth, removes inflamed or infected pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, and seals them with a root-filling material. A filling or crown may then be needed to protect the remaining tooth structure.
Why is RCT required?
When infection has spread deeper into a tooth, Root Canal Treatment is required. The pulp starts degenerating once it gets infected. RCT is advised when a tooth abscess forms, a pocket of pus caused by bacterial infection. Not treating it can lead to severe pain and swelling in the jawbone.
Fillings
The tooth structure becomes very weak when it starts decaying, and the resulting cavity needs to be filled immediately to prevent further decay and restore optimal chewing function. Fillings help treat tooth decay and restore the health of the damaged tooth. We use both composite white fillings (tooth-coloured) and silver amalgam fillings, depending on the location and extent of the decay.

Is root canal treatment painful?
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia during treatment. It is normal for the area to feel tender afterwards; the amount and duration vary. Contact the clinic if pain or swelling is severe or worsening.
How many visits does RCT take?
Most root canal treatments are completed in 1-2 visits. Complex cases may require additional visits.
What's the difference between composite and amalgam fillings?
Composite fillings are tooth-coloured and blend seamlessly with natural teeth. Amalgam (silver) fillings are more durable and may be recommended for back teeth with heavy chewing forces.
